News Release: PGCPS Encourages Community to Get Involved in Planning FY2018-2023 CIP

UPPER MARLBORO, MD The Prince George’s County Board of Education encourages students, families and community members to attend the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Public Hearing on September 15 to share priorities for school improvements, renovations and new construction. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the Board Room of the Sasscer Administration Building, located at 14201 School Lane in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Please call the Board Office at 301-952-6115 by 3:30 p.m. the day of the hearing to register to speak.

The proposed FY 2018-2023 CIP was presented to the Board on August 25th for review and discussion. After receiving public input on September 15, the final CIP will be presented for Board approval on September 22; the public may share input during this meeting, as well. The approved FY 2017 CIP budget for Prince George’s County Public Schools totals $151,817,000; the proposed FY 2018 CIP request is for $293,680,551.

The CIP includes detailed capital project funding requests for the upcoming Fiscal Year (FY) beginning the first of July, as well as five progressive years of planned capital projects. Capital projects are prioritized based on school facilities needs as justified in the Board approved FY17 Educational Facilities Master Plan. The CIP and EFMP are both fully aligned with the PGCPS academic mission and goals as stated in the PGCPS Strategic Plan and the 2015 PGCPS 5-Year Bridge to Excellence (BTE) Comprehensive Master Plan.

Once approved, the CIP is forwarded to the County Council and the County Executive for funding review as well as to the State of Maryland. Both the County and the State will review the details of the CIP in anticipation of approving capital funds in the Spring. During the time of review, community stakeholders have many opportunities to voice their opinions regarding the various capital projects contained in the CIP.
