• News Release: PGCPS Chief Executive Officer, Board of Education Request Formal Investigation Into Graduation Rate Allegations

    UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell and a majority of the Prince George’s County Board of Education today submitted a formal request to State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen B. Salmon for a follow-up investigation into high school graduation rate allegations.

    Dr. Maxwell and Dr. Eubanks issued the following joint statement:

    “In the interest of bringing closure to public speculation regarding our graduation rates, we sent a formal request today to Dr. Karen Salmon, State Superintendent of Schools, for a follow-up investigation by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). The letter was also signed by eight other members of the Prince George’s County Board of Education.

    “We continue to deny accusations of a systemic effort to promote students in order to inflate graduation rates. An investigation by MSDE earlier this year, at the direction of the U.S. Department of Education, concluded the same. From the beginning, the school system has stood willing to collaborate with MSDE to resolve the issue. A follow-up inquiry will help to address concerns in the interest of transparency and accountability.”
